In the late '80s there was an upswing of interest in Native American music, which coincided with the New Age movement. This therapeutic style of music was created to foster holistic healing as well as psychic or spiritual pursuits, and many New Age players drew on Native American chants and instruments for inspiration. A more uptempo example of Native American fusion music is tribal techno, which combines hypnotic traditional drumming styles with electronica. —Tad Hendrickson- National Geographic Music

Chanting

Contributing Writer

Chanting is described as the continuous recitation of mantras.  Generically mantra refers to sacred words or syllables used repeatedly in religious and ceremonial rituals. The term "mantra" is derived from Sanskrit man, "mind," and tra, "to deliver."

Generally the mantra is considered a holy or divine name, word, or syllable by the one that says or thinks it. The mantra is believed to help one to achieve his or her goal which may be a mission, an objective, or the attainment of something desired. For example, in Hinduism the mantra, which holds the essence of a guru's teaching, helps to initiate someone along their individual, spiritual path.

Likewise, in Buddhism, mantra may be a syllable or syllables which represent the Chanting Monk.jpgcosmic forces, aspects of Buddhas, or the name of Buddha. The mantra is repeated during meditation, and in Vajrayana Buddhism this is accompanied by visualizations and body postures.

Chant (from Old French chanter) is the rhythmic speaking or singing of words or sounds, often primarily on one or two pitches called reciting tones. Chants may range from a simple melody involving a limited set of notes to highly complex musical structures, often including a great deal of repetition of musical sub phrases, such as Great Responsories and Offertories of Gregorian chant. Chant may be considered speech, music, or a heightened or stylized form of speech. In the later Middle Ages some religious chant evolved into song (forming one of the roots of later Western music).

In many cultures and civilizations, chanting is a form of vocal meditation and has survived through the ages. Practiced by many people around the world seeking greater health, a sense of well-being, enlightenment, and a connection to the divine, chanting unites the mind, body, emotions, and breath. This unification can open and nurture your creativity, lower stress levels, and teach you to become fully alert and in the moment.

Chanting lets you raise the level of your own vibration to a higher spiritual state. You can chant as an invocation or to set intention. Reciting even the simplest chant can bolster a dwindling spirit, sharpen the mind, and produce natural painkillers within the brain. While chanting, you may feel energy surging through your physical body or joy entering your heart. Chanting can liberate and ground you simultaneously because it allows your soul to soar freely while compelling you to focus on the here and now.
